Langhorne Slim Interview 7/28/2009 by Tara Pham, Kenny Hofmeister
Tara Pham: We've got Langhorne Slim and the War Eagles with us.
Langhorne Slim: That's sort of right. Just Langhorne Slim. We're phasing that name out.
Tara: So, is Langhorne Slim just you then, or is that going to incorporate the whole band?
Langhorne: You know, I think we're all one here.
Tara: That's beautiful. Do you guys want to introduce yourselves?
Langhorne: I'm Langhorne
Jeff Ratner: I'm Jeff.
Langhorne: And sometimes I'm Jeff, and sometimes he's Langhorne.
Tara: So, you are coming from Columbia, right? And you're going to Hoboken?
Langhorne: Yeah, we're in Hoboken on Friday. Basically we did about 10 shows with Josh Ritter
and his band. Now we're continuing on throughout the summer on our own headlining tour. We put
out a record on September 29, our new record which we're very very excited about. And we keep
touring forever.
Tara: Awesome. What's the new record like? What can we expect to hear that's different?
Langhorne: We're going to play two songs from it.
Tara: Awesome. Let's hear it.
Langhorne: Let's hear what this thing sounds like. [plays "Back to the Wild" with acoustic
guitar and bass]
Tara: Thanks, that was awesome. So, you guys tour a lot, but you're also from New York.
Langhorne: No, Jeff and I are from Pennsylvania originally, but ...
Jeff: The band formed in New York. I live in New York now...
Langhorne: And I live in California. And Malachi lives underneath bridges all throughout the
country.
Jeff: The Wisconsin area.
Langhorne: That's why he couldn't be here for this. The band was out of Brooklyn initially.
Tara: So, how does that work? What do you guys do when you're not touring?
Langhorne: We say "Hello" to our girlfriends. That's a big part of why we're spread out. And
also because we spend the majority of our year together on the road, it doesn't impact the
band negatively to not all live in one town.
Jeff: It would be nice sometimes, if that could happen again.
Langhorne: I'd like to live close to Jeff and Malachi. I just have to convince them to live
close to me. Live with me, Jeff!
Jeff: I'd love to live close to you if you weren't in Los Angeles.
Tara: You don't like Los Angeles?
Langhorne: It wasn't my choice, but I'm fine with it.
Jeff: We're trying to have the band be centrally located in Camden, NJ, but they're afraid of
arson.
Langhorne: We're still talking about it. We're going to figure it out.
Tara: Where are your favorite places to play, seeing as you're all from different places?
Jeff: I love to play and visit North Carolina, for sure.
Langhorne: He's got a sweet spot in his heart for North Carolina. It's going to sound like a
diplomatic answer, but we do ... I guess we have our favorite cities, but ... it's just nice to
be someplace different every night and play for different people. There are some cities, I
guess, that I enjoy more than other ones, but...
Tara: Do you care to say which ones?
Langhorne: I love San Francisco. Chicago, New York's a good town, Philadelphia.
Jeff: Portland.
Kenny: How do you feel about St. Louis?
Langhorne: St. Louis? I thought it was just assumed that St. Louis was my favorite. [laughs]
These are the cities that are below. Even though we've played in St. Louis a few times, I guess
we always have a show the next day. We really haven't spent much time here. I would look
forward to adding St. Louis to the list. But I need to see more.
Tara: Would you like to play another tune for us?
Langhorne: Yes please! [to Jeff] Do you mind a little slow? [plays "I Love You, But Goodbye"]
That song is about somebody that loves somebody but had to go away.
Kenny: It sounds like you guys tour a lot; we've spoken about that. But would you consider
yourself a touring band or a recording band? Do you prefer to put out records, or would you
rather tour all the time?
Langhorne: I'd hate to do one without the other. We're definitely a touring band and also a
recording band. What I prefer is touring right after we put out a record.
Kenny: Your new record is coming out here pretty soon, right?
Langhorne: It's sort of a nice time because we're excited for this record. It makes it even
more fun. Just within the band you have more...
Jeff: Momentum.
Langhorne: Momentum, thank you. And after the record, of course it's really exciting because
you're finally putting this thing out.
Kenny: Leading up to it you're playing some of your new music, obviously, and we'll hear some
of that tonight. Afterwards, you'll continue to tour until... the world just ends! For all
eternity.
Langhorne: We spend most of our time on the road, as we were saying.
Tara: What do you guys do when you're not touring?
Langhorne: Malachi gambles.
Tara: That's why he lives under bridges?
Langhorne: That's where he studies blackjack. [laughs] I have been going to the beach.
Jeff: I've been doing the beach a little. It's between hanging in New York and hanging with
friends and family in Pennsylvania, or North Carolina with my girlfriend.
Tara: Prior to having all this momentum and being in the band, did you guys have any other
jobs?
Langhorne: I started doing this when I got out of college. My last semester in college
was my first tour. This has been my job since then, which is a good thing because I didn't make
employers proud of me.
Jeff: I used to do some home care work once in a while. Part time when I was around New York a
little more.
Tara: What would you be doing if you weren't making music? Could you be doing anything else?
Langhorne: I don't know what the heck I'd be doing, but this brings a great amount of joy and
we're very lucky and pleased to be doing it.
Tara: I've seen you guys live, you put on an awesome show. You bring a lot of other people joy.
Langhorne: Thank you. That's so sweet.
Tara: Do you want to play another song? Do one more?
Langhorne: Any suggestions? "Land of Dreams"? We're playing some slower songs, at the show
we'll pick it up. [plays "Land of Dreams"]
Tara: Well, Thank you Langhorne Slim. Please check him out at Off Broadway tonight.
Kenny: It's sold out, so unless you have a ticket tough-ass... But you do have a new album
coming out on September 29 and it's titled...
Langhorne: Be Set Free
Kenny: That will be out on Kemado. That's like 2 months from now, but you have new music going
up on your myspace. There's plenty out there for you to listen to.
Langhorne: Yes, please do!
Kenny: Thanks, guys, for coming in.
Langhorne: Our pleasure. Thank you very much, guys.
